Compared to other counties, Mayo doesn’t have as much to see, but the places it doesn’t have are high calibre stuff. From its unique beaches to mountains, and friendly people, this definitely deserves a stop on our route.

Donegal Mayo
Driving from Donegal to Mayo can be a gorgeous experience if you take the coast road, so it’s hard to put a number on how long it can take. But with the price of fuel nowadays, I recommend saving the coast roads (and fuel!) for when you’re exploring within each county rather than from travelling from one county to another. It takes about 3 hours driving from Letterkenny (in the middle of Donegal) to the heart of Mayo.

Wild Camp at Keem Beach
Keem Beach
Honestly, Keem Beach is so beautiful, it’s the perfect spot to wild camp! That means just pitch your tent wherever you like, and sleep for free out in the wild. There is a small patch of grass just before the beach, and it’s an ideal spot. You won’t have any facilities of course, no electricity or toilets (if you’re tenting), but it’s free, and you really feel like you’re fully emersed in nature!
Secret Tip: wild camping is legal on any public land in Ireland, except where there is a sign saying otherwise WITH the crest of the local county council. So unless you see a sign saying “By order of Mayo County Council”, you’re free to wild camp anywhere you want here! Sometimes you will see signs bought and put up by residents of the area saying “No Camping”, but without the County Council Stamp on it, these signs cannot legally stop you from wild camping.
