St Colman’s Church & Cemetery Ruins

What can I say, there’s just something so charming about the simple stone chapels of Ireland. Get your camera ready!

Sehenswürdigkeiten
Cromwell’s Barracks

You’ll pass these ruins on your ferry ride to the island. The ruins of an old 16th-century fort are perfect for exploring and makes for a great picture. We made a stop here in the middle of kayaking around the bay. It was an opportunity to stretch our legs and give our arms a break from paddling.

🏝️ Zu Inishbofin

Inishbofin is a gem of an island off the coast of Galway, and may very well be the highlight of your whole trip. Not as commercialised as the Aran Islands, Bofin is for backpackers, not tourists. A true break away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. All the stereotypical, romanticised images that exist about Ireland come to life on this Island. Fresh sea breezes, thatched cottages, stone walls, matchbox cars, cattle and sheep grazing lazily in the fields, farmers with their loyal sheepdogs walking about, fisherman working in their boats, traditional music playing in cosy pubs, mountains, pristine beaches – it’s a picture-perfect paradise. With trails for walking, mountains for hiking, bikes and kayaks for renting, and even equestrian tours available, this is a garden of Eden, an untouched, undisturbed oasis in a world of concrete modernity.

🚍 Transport

GalwayInishbofin

Staying in Clifden Eco Beach Campsite in Connemara means it’s very easy to get to Inishbofin. You will need to get a ferry from Cleggan, a small village just 10 minutes drive away. There’s a small bar-restaurant, The Pier Bar, at Claggan Pier where you can pass time while waiting for the ferry. The ferry is for people only, not vehicles (but you can bring a bike). There are two long-term car parks where you can leave your car/caravan for the few days you’re gone. (One carpark is right behind the ferry ticket office, one is at the other end of the village). You won’t need your car on Inishbofin, everything is within walking/ cycling distance. The ferry ride lasts about 40 minutes.

Murray's Doonmore Hotel

Staying here is nothing short of a pleasure. Once you land on Inishbofin, the owner, Andrew, will collect you and drive you up to the Hotel (and he’ll give you a lift down to the pier when you’re leaving too). If you prefer, he will just take your bags, and you can walk up yourself, which takes about 20 minutes. I recommend walking everywhere to really get a feel for the place and enjoy the nature. The rooms have great views, either of the ocean or the animals grazing in the surrounding fields. Breakfast is included and there is a bar and restaurant with the warmest, friendliest, staff you’ll ever meet! And the award-winning food is to die for. Great staff, great food, and a great location, staying at Murray’s Hotel is a worthwhile experience in and of itself.

There are places to camp on the island too, but with windy island weather, I prefer to stay in a hotel for this stop.

There is a bike shop and pop-up kayak shop (using the term ‘shop’ rather loosely here), where you can rent bikes, get guides and maps of the best spots on the island, and (during the summer), go on a guided kayaking tour around the bay, and to the Cromwellian fort ruins. You will need cash for this, as business is run very informally here on the island. With the exception of the hotel, you will need cash a lot of the time while on Inishbofin. These pop-up kayak shop is usually only available during the summer months (May-September), but you should be able to rent bikes year-round.

This is a nice stop to learn more about the island’s history, located just off the pier.

Exploring the wilderness of the island is best done on foot, and a hike around Westquarter is relaxing, and freeing. I highly recommend hiking up the western mountain for a view over the ocean. You’re likely to spot seals and dolphins, and watching the early stages of the sun setting is simply breathtaking. Just remember to hike down before it gets dark!

Trá Gheall

You’ll come across this tiny beach on your exploration of the Westquarter. An unspoilt gem, it’s important to remember when visiting here – take only pictures, leave only footprints.

The beaches of this island are clean, clear and quiet. Perfect for picnics, mediation, yoga, chilling with friends – you name it! The fresh feeling of the sea breeze filling your lungs will vitalise your body and calm your soul.
