The Kehlsteinhaus is known as Hitler’s holiday home. You can hike up here or go by car or bus. The restaurant at the peak promises wonderful views of the entire region. This spot is a must-see, especially for any history geeks out there!
While a traditional ferry trip around the lake is always an option, there’s something magical about a row boat. This small rental company is not very well known, and does not have an endless supply of boats, so it’s best to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid waiting.
Opening hours: 10:00 – 18:00
Price is charged per hour and you pay a deposit in advance.
Tip: If you want to visit St. Bartholomä Chapel, you should allow about 4 hours altogether.
Many Germans consider the national park of Lake Königssee and the surrounding Berchtesgadener Land, as a natural paradise, and the most beautiful lake in Germany. International travellers tend to think of it as Hitler’s holiday residence, as it was a favoured spot of the dictator. No matter what lures you here, everyone agrees that Lake Königssee and the surrounding mountains are a piece of heaven on earth. Hiking, climbing, skiing, boat trips, good food – all this and more awaits you here. A place you won’t soon forget!
With the Freeway Camper, driving from Munich to Königssee will take about 2.5 hours, depending on traffic.

A great campsite with a beautiful location and view. Lake Königssee is easily reachable by foot from here, as well of many other interesting spots in the area. The staff is very friendly and you can pre-order bread rolls for the morning with your cup of coffee.

This cable car takes you up Mount Jenner, where a restaurant and viewing platform await. There are also beautiful hiking trails up to the summit. We took the cable car to the top and then hiked down. The other way around is also possible, of course, and the cable car even has a hop-on/hop-off stop half way up the peak. It also serves as a ski lift in the winter months.
Fancy a relaxing, stress-free boat trip around the entire lake? Look no further! Feel free to hop off whenever you like at the various individual stations and start hiking!
A hike from Schönau to the Grünstein takes just a few hours. From here, you’ll have wonderful views of Mount Watzmann, Lake Königssee and the surrounding region. Some sections of the hike are quite steep, but overall, this climb is definitely doable – even for beginners. Once you reach the top, continue hiking other paths and explore even more of the mountain landscape, or simply relax in the bars and restaurants, the Grünsteinhütte, with something to eat and drink.
German cuisine, super tasty food with a wonderful view – especially if you get an outside table. What’s not to love? And the cherry on top – the restaurant was directly opposite from our campsite.
This is easily the best bakery in the area and definitely offers the best views for your morning of afternoon coffee. The location is admittedly not very central, but here is a spot to get away from tourists and connect with locals. For all the foodies among you, this bakery is worth the little detour.
