📌 Spots

Turmberg Hill

The Turmberg (which literally means “tower hill”) is the best point for a perfect view over Karlsruhe and the surrounding area. Because of the flat surrounding countryside, you can even see as far as France. The castle, however, is rather less impressive and has since been converted into a gourmet restaurant. And don’t worry – the view is also accessible if you’re feeling lazy: a cute little cable car (the oldest funicular railway in Germany) goes straight up from the S-Bahn stop.

Sehenswürdigkeiten
Karlsruhe Palace

Karlsruhe Palace is the geographical centre of the city and the most famous sight here. Many aspects of life in Karlsruhe revolve around this, even if you don’t necessarily set foot inside.

The Palace park, to the north, is the best area for picnicking, slacklining or outdoor drinking games such as flunkyball.

For the entire month of December and early January, an outdoor skating rink is set up in front of the palace. Every autumn, the Karlsruhe Light Festival, Schlosslichtspiele, sees the castle act as a backdrop for breathtaking artistic projections.

🏝️ Zu Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is not the largest or most exciting city in southern Germany, but it is perfectly situated for excursions to France, the Black Forest or the Palatinate. The former electoral city has two focal points in the city centre: Karlsruhe Castle with the adjacent castle park, and the nearby university, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. With a further 7 colleges and universities and a total of 40,000 students, the student scene strongly characterises the cityscape.

Karlsruhe has not yet been very popular for tourism, mainly because the city’s short past (the city has only been around for 300 years) means that it has little history and no typical historic old town. However, this does not mean that Karlsruhe is not well suited for both cultural and nature holidays.

It took us about 4 hours to get from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Karlsruhe with the Freeway Camper.

This is a beautiful, family-run hotel in a central location with its own brewery!

The Freeway Camper can be parked in the hotel’s underground car park for €9/night. If you only want to stay for a short trip into town, you can also get a short-term parking ticket for €1.50 an hour.

Karlsruhe Festivals

Karlsruhe is a popular festival city with dozens of annual events. The most important of these include:

– MAY/JUN + OCT/NOV: The Karlsruher Mess’ folk festival comes to the outskirts of the city twice a year for 2-3 weeks each.

– NOV/DEC: Karlsruhe Christkindlesmarkt: Even though Karlsruhe has no historic old town, this 4-week Christmas market has a cosy and festive feel with its wood-chip paths, wooden huts and fir trees.

– AUG: The Schlosslichtspiele, a breathtaking display of light art, takes place in Karlsruhe every August and is free to everyone – no ticket required. Enjoy the exhibits of changing animations by artists from all over the world, with a new call for entries every year.

– JUL: DAS FEST – Hugely popular, cheap, and lasting several days, this is Karlsruhe’s biggest music festival. The side stages and most of the food stalls are even free to enter – you only need a ticket for the main stage, which hosted popular artists like Seeed, Jan Delay and Tom Gregory in 2022.

Getting through the City Centre

The fan-shaped city, as Karlsruhe is also called, was designed on a drawing board 300 years ago. This means that the city centre has very straight, well-organised streets, a clear layout and efficient local transport. After the metro was recently established underground beneath the city centre, the main streets are free of any traffic (apart from bicycles). You’ll find that the best places for nightlife and shopping are close together.

Karlsruhe is also as flat as a pancake, which is why bikes and e-scooters are very popular with the locals. Nextbike rental bikes come in handy for getting around. Not only are they cheaper than e-scooters, but the entire core area of the city is a free parking area. So you can leave them wherever you like after use.

Mount Klotz
Hermann-Veit-Strasse 7, 76135 Karlsruhe, Germany

“Mount Klotz”, as the people of Karlsruhe affectionately call it, is a grassy hill in the middle of a park, Günter-Klotz-Anlage. It’s a magnet for chillers, students and children. The hill is the centre of many festivals and events, but also a relaxing spot after a walk along the river Alb.

Fun Fact: With its 15-metre height, it is the highest point in the core area of Karlsruhe

Oberwald Animal Park
Oberwald Zoo, 76199 Karlsruhe

Only a few tourists actually see this free-to-enter wildlife park. For reasons of space, it was split from the large zoo in the city centre and relocated to the middle of a nearby forest. The several-hectare site, with its dozens of outdoor enclosures, is home to many native and exotic animal species, mainly large animals from moderate to colder regions of the world – from bison to the Przewalski’s horse. Perfect for a long walk in the forest with some furry friends!

Weingarten Moor
Langer Bruchweg, 76356 Weingarten (Baden)

Not many people know about this nature reserve, and even fewer have been there. No wonder – who would expect to find a moor in this region, and one of the largest and most beautiful in the Lower Rhine region at that. The reserve is suitable for both smaller and larger excursions and is very easy to reach by public transport from Karlsruhe.

Mogogo
Stephanienstraße 2A, 76135 Karlsruhe, Germany
https://restaurantguru.com/Mogogo-Karlsruhe

The Eritrean restaurant, Mogogo, not only has charm and sociable owners who enjoy chatting with customers, it also has a warm African atmosphere and inviting all passer-by to call in for a meal under its quaint thatched roof.

Our recommendation: order an African platter for the table, with an original African Mongozo beer to drink.

DeliBurgers
Akademiestraße 39, 76135 Karlsruhe, Germany
https://restaurantguru.com/DeliBurgers-Karlsruhe

Almost every Karlsruhe resident agrees that this burger joint as the best in town – and rightly so. Though the restaurant is very small and looks unassuming, the burgers speak for themselves. The focus here is not on extravagance, but quality.

Kabibi Shawarma
Kaiserstrasse 59, 76135 Karlsruhe
https://restaurantguru.com/Habibi-Karlsruhe-Schawarma-und-Falafel-Karlsruhe

When Kabibi opened in Karlsruhe, it hit the student scene like a bomb. With a style that is more of a combination of Syrian and German flavours, it’s bigger, healthier and more exciting than any kebab, with lots of vegetables and good sauces. A must-try if you want something quick on the go!
