Love lakes, mountains and incredible panoramas? This is the place for you! Take a pedal boat through the lake, walk around it, or walk on its frozen surface in winter – the choice is yours! By car, the lake is only about 15 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, parking costs €8 for 4 hours, €1 for each additional hour. It takes about 30 minutes by the cogwheel railway, Zugspitzbahn, and the same by bus.
This iconic attraction is just a 45-minute drive away. The castle is also on the way to our next destination, Lake Constance. Park your car at the bottom. The walk up takes about 45 minutes or go all out and ascend in a horse-drawn carriage for €7. If you don’t want to burden the animals, there are also buses for €2. Visiting King Ludwig II’s fairy-tale castle is simply a must. Entrance costs about €15. But even just from the outside, this castle is worth seeing. The Marienbrücke bridge is a great spot for pictures, but it’s usually crowded, so here’s a tip: walk a little further up the path – there’s a small vantage point that not everyone knows about, and from there you’ll have a great view of the Alpsee lake!
Next, we head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This is a must-visit for every lover of the great outdoors, and it’s just 30 minutes away from Mittenwald. From mighty gorges to turquoise mountain lakes to Germany’s highest mountain – this place offers you the full package!
It takes us just 30 minutes to get from Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Freeway Camper.

The Isarhorn Campsite lies exactly between Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, so it’s the ideal starting point for these two destinations. Since we liked it so much, we just stayed a little longer.

A popular photo spot for Instagram. The small lake is picturesquely set against the dream backdrop of the mighty Karwendel mountains. The lake is located on the German Alpine Road, so you don’t have to walk far.
If you’ve been to the Leutasch Gorge in Mittenwald, you will have an idea of what an ordinary gorge is like. But the Partnach Gorge is on the next level! Masses of water have carved their way through the rocks over centuries. Our tip: Take a rain jacket and sturdy shoes – it can get wet and slippy! You can admire this natural spectacle for just €6.
Let’s go to the highest mountain in Germany! There’s plenty of parking on site at the valley station, but you can also get here easily by bus and train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The total price for the ascent and descent is €63. But the view is well worth it!
The Bavarian rivers, gorges and ravines around Garmisch-Partenkirchen allow you to experience nature up close. Haven’t tried canyoning yet? Here’s your chance!
