🏝️ Zu San Juan de Nicaragua/Greytown

Our last destination is the town at the end of the river San Juan. San Juan de Nicaragua is home to the Rama and Creole people – indigenous peoples of Nicaragua. Now brimming with culture and plenty of historical facts, this was a prime location for Spanish colonisers as they entered Nicaragua to raid and colonise the country. A fire completely destroyed this town in the 1980s. Consequently, the settlement moved to a new location and received a new name: San Juan de Nicaragua, or San Juan del Norte.

What remains of the old town (Greytown) can be explored with a local, knowledgable guide. A tour like this is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Spanish and British conquest of Central America.

Hostal Familiar

This is a lovely hotel situated right at the river bank. It boasts a lovely owner, and a reasonable price of 400 córdobas per night for two people.

To get there:From the port, first turn left. There will be a pathway going right along the river that you should follow. The accommodation is a 10-minute walk away, and it will be on your left. You will see a sign when you get there. This place is marked on Google Maps. However, if you are unable to find it, remember you can always ask a friendly local. Locals will point it out to you if you can’t find it, so simply ask!

Where Greytown stood before it was destroyed by fire, we now see a jungle graveyard. This ghost town is home to the burial sites of many European colonisers and pirates. Visitors can just about make out the inscriptions on the tombstones, making it a sombre and interesting journey to one of the most significant remains of the Old Town. The graveyard is divided into four sections, where colonisers of different descents were buried: British, Catholic, Masonic, and Sabine. This spot can be explored with a local guide on a kayak or canoe. Prices are around 20 USD for a tour of a few hours – you can also combine visits to different sights.
