🏝️ Zu El Castillo

The largest town on the river San Juan, El Castillo is home to the Indio Maíz Reserve – one of the best preserved natural spaces in Nicaragua, and the best place for wildlife!

El Castillo is the perfect base for exploring the river. All the tours into the Indio Maíz Reserve start and end in El Castillo.

This town is full of rich history, and it used to be very strategic during the Spanish colonisation. You can learn the history by going to the museum, as well as by speaking to the locals.

Ich empfehle:

El Castillo is where the tours go out to Indio Maiz Reserve. I recommend doing an overnight tour, and stay at least one night inside the reserve. Tours agents/guides can easily be found by asking around any local, or the police station situated right across the port on the main plaza. They will point you in the right direction.

Hospedajes Cofalito

A guest house run by a local family. This place cannot be booked online. It is okay to simply show up.

To get there: you can find this guest house on Google Maps. It is located right on the main square, next to the boat port. This means that once you disembark, the accommodation is less than a one-minute walk away. All you have to do is turn left on the path leading away from the square. Hospedajes Cofalito is one of the first buildings opposite the police station.
